Hello, and welcome to the 103rd edition of Byte Action newsletter.
Last week was an eventful one. The Develop: Brighton conference took center stage, garnering high praise from numerous participants who thoroughly enjoyed the event. Notably, there were several significant announcements during that time, unveiling new studio openings and exciting acquisitions in the industry.
Tencent Subsidiary - Lightspeed Studios had acquired Lucid Games. Lucid Games reassured their audiences that they will retain full autonomy during their creative and operative processes whilst taking advantage of the tech that Lightspeed Studios can provide.
Cloud Imperium Games had acquired Montreal based studio Turbulent. Turbulent and Cloud Imperium have been collaborating together on Star Citizen since 2012, so it seems like it was a natural next step for both.
To add to this, Behaviour Interactive, the developer responsible for Dead by Daylight, recently announced the launch of its Cornwall studio, named Behaviour UK - South. This new studio will predominantly consist of former employees from AntiMatter Games, a local developer whose parent company had declared its intention to shut down.
In other news - Sony announced that it’s pouring $2.16bn into R&D for live service games and extended reality. This is more than double that they had invested in 2020.
Lastly, seems like every week this year there’s been some sort of announcement about Microsoft/Activision Blizzard deal. And it looks like we finally might be at the finish line here.

Rumours
Dev Talks
“Actually, that's one of the reasons for writing the book. As a game historian, I think that getting game history down in print, somewhere that people can research it and refer to it, is important. This book is basically a chronicle of all the games that I've made and when they were made, with as much detailed information as I can fit in a book about them. That's basically part of the reason for writing it; it's now down. Over the years, the waters can get muddied, so I really wanted to put down everything that I remembered. If I forget someday, it's all in the book.” John Romero
